Hospice House of St. Tammany is ready to wine and dine the community and hopefully make some progress toward a new house in the process. The nonprofit organization known for giving doting care to end-of-life patients is bringing some of that caring energy to an event where patrons can enjoy some of the luxuries in life. The annual Wine and Dine with Hospice House returns for its 15th year from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Nov. 14.

It’s a time to honor those who have served the country, and St. Tammany is celebrating Veterans Day in grand style this year. A number of events are taking place across the parish. Some are tried and true traditional gatherings, but there is a splash of new this year, too. The Mandeville Lakefront will play host to the parish’s newest — and perhaps biggest — Veterans Day celebration this year. But there’s a little something for everyone when it comes to honoring those who have served.

It’s beginning to look a little bit red in St. Tammany Parish this month. And no, it has nothing to do with the gory costumes that come along with the Halloween season. It’s time to Wrap the Parish in Red for Red Ribbon Week, a week dedicated to educating kids about personal choices, drug prevention and self-esteem. The idea is for the community to come together as schools launch their Red Ribbon Weeks and deck out the area in red.

The Slidell City Council is making moves to acquire two pieces of privately-owned land in the city, one for potential recreation and another for water retention. The parcels include a 4-acre property at the intersection of West Hall and Carroll roads and a small 100-foot by 111-foot piece of land on South Park Place Street in the Terrace Park Subdivision. The 4-acre lot was appraised at $350,000, but the city is buying it for a reduced price of $180,000.
