For Zachary Waugh, swimming wasn’t something he left behind after graduating from Riverview Community High School in 2009. Swimming competitively in both middle and high school and his love for the sport followed him into his adult life. He jokingly states he continued because he likes to eat (a lot) and swimming helps justify the extra calories. But all kidding aside, he maintains an enjoyment of swimming for the purpose of competing in destination races, in particular triathlons.

Sometimes life has a way of pointing you in the right direction. As a high school student, our class was given an assignment to write our own obituaries. I didn’t fully understand it back then, but I came to realize it was an exercise to see what we hoped to accomplish in life. I had no idea why, but I saw myself as a newspaper columnist. Michael Rucker will never forget his drive home from the Ford truck plant in Dearborn in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 2. It was around 4 a.m. and even though his commute began like it normally does, it ended with an event unlike anything else he ever experienced. A young woman heading north in the southbound lanes of I-75, near Outer Drive, crashed into another vehicle, killing both herself and the driver of the other vehicle.
