A quarter of the NHL’s 32 franchises moved on from their head coaches following the season, and more than half of those vacancies have been filled. The Bruins, Penguins, and Kraken are still looking to fill the top spot behind their benches. There are familiar names on the market (Peter Laviolette and John Tortorella) and some fresh faces available (Marco Sturm, Misha Donskov, and Marc Savard). Having a GM in place for the foreseeable future is critical to attract potential head coaches.

The NHL’s annual free agent frenzy begins at high noon on July 1. Most of the big names fly off the shelves within minutes of the opening bell as those who have achieved unrestricted status can cash in. General managers flush with greenbacks can transform their franchises with a few swipes of the pen. But what about the free agents who are still technically tethered to their current teams? The Bruins have signed general manager Don Sweeney to a two-year contract extension the team announced Tuesday morning. Sweeney was the GM for Team Canada’s gold-medal winning squad at the Four Nations Face-off in February and will serve as an assistant GM for 2026 Winter Olympics.

The first is that the high demand for new housing has vastly exceeded the supply, leading to astronomical increases in the price of buying or renting a home. The second part is that rapid regional population growth has vastly exceeded the infrastructure to support it.

A lucky No. 7? It’s quite possible. When the Bruins’ luck bounced the wrong way on draft lottery night — the team held the No. 5 pick pre-Ping-Pong balls — they ended up sliding down two picks. While falling back is generally not a good thing, the fact remains Boston could still end up with a franchise-altering player on June 27. Over the last decade, it’s been a mixed bag at No. 7, with some franchise cornerstones, some failings, and some future promise plucked at that slot.
