A lucky No. 7? It’s quite possible. When the Bruins’ luck bounced the wrong way on draft lottery night — the team held the No. 5 pick pre-Ping-Pong balls — they ended up sliding down two picks. While falling back is generally not a good thing, the fact remains Boston could still end up with a franchise-altering player on June 27. Over the last decade, it’s been a mixed bag at No. 7, with some franchise cornerstones, some failings, and some future promise plucked at that slot.

A shortened season didn’t translate to an elongated summer for some Bruins. Seven Bostonians stockpiled their skates and sticks and headed to the IIHF World Championship, which opens Friday in Denmark and Sweden. The bunch is highlighted by David Pastrnak, who helped lead Czechia to the title a year ago. Coming off an exceptional season (43 goals, 106 points) in which he ascended to the Bruins’ de facto captain, Pastrnak will open play against Switzerland at Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning, Denmark.

The Bruins landed the No. 7 pick in the draft lottery Monday night at NHL Network studios in Secaucus, N.J., the club’s first top-10 slot since grabbing Dougie Hamilton with the ninth overall selection in 2011. The Islanders won the lottery for the No. 1 overall pick. San Jose will pick second. It was the first time in the 30-year history of the lottery that the drawing was shown on live TV. Previously, the lottery was held just before the broadcast, with commissioner Gary Bettman presiding.

A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Joonas Korpisalo (31, signed through 2027-28 at $4 million per, $1 million of which Ottawa pays). Korpisalo (11-10-3, 2.90 goals-against average) was solid and sometimes spectacular.

David Pastrnak stood out with his play this season. The Bruins right winger finished tied for third in the NHL with 106 points and fourth in goals (43) on a team with precious few scoring threats. However, it was Pastrnak’s work behind the scenes, particularly (but not exclusively) following the tumultuous trade deadline week, that stood out to his teammates. The Bruins roster underwent myriad changes throughout the season, and it left the leadership core in tatters.
