Area Catholics lauded the selection of Pope Leo XIV, not just because he’s American born, but because they’re confident he’ll be a “bridge builder,” dedicated to serving the poor and marginalized. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, originally from the Chicago area but serving the church for decades in South America, was announced Thursday as the 267th pope, taking the name Leo XIV. He was elected cardinal by the late Pope Francis less than two years ago.

The Steel Curtain roller coaster is almost done with its rehab and is set to return to action. After more than a year closure, Kennywood officials announced Thursday Pennsylvania’s tallest roller coaster will be up and rolling for Memorial Day weekend. The West Mifflin amusement park opened for its 127th season last month with the promise that the ride would return.

Pete Cappadocia has played with fire, smoke and other special effects for four decades. Known as “Pyro Pete,” the pyrotechnics expert has spent many nights lighting up the stage for some of the biggest rock and roll bands in the world, including AC/DC, which is set to play Acrisure Stadium on Thursday night. An employee of New Castle-based Pyrotecnico, his first show with AC/DC was in the early 1980s. “I was lucky to get this cool job,” said Cappadocia, a Long Island native who lives in Las Vegas.

Marquerite Westinghouse hosted elaborate dinners and soirees at her and her husband George’s estate on what is now the grounds of Westinghouse Park. There are photographs of her wearing fancy headpieces. So the site became a fitting space for another big-time party on Saturday — the annual PNC Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy Spring Hat Luncheon. The 10-acre green space in Pittsburgh’s Point Breeze neighborhood was the backdrop to the sold-out event of nearly 600 guests dressed in their finest.
