A dominant ridge of high pressure that has been serving as the main weather-maker for most of southern Alberta over the past few days is starting to flatten and track to the east. Behind it lies an intense low pressure system that, as of Friday morning, was still in the north Pacific basin. That low is expected to elongate and strengthen over the next couple of days as it slowly moves onto the coast.

Steady precipitation fell over portions of southern British Columbia and central Alberta overnight and early Thursday, briefly prompting a special weather statement for some higher elevation highways in the B.C. interior. The good news is that rain helped to rapidly lower the fire danger risk for areas along the northern foothills and central Alberta, with some areas reporting a low risk as of 7 a.m. Thursday compared to a very high or extreme risk Wednesday.

Daytime highs in southern Alberta are expected to hit the mid to high 20s Wednesday, with some locations in the southeast reaching temperatures as warm as 30 C. This is concerning given - as of 7 a.m. May 7, 2025 - most of Alberta and Saskatchewan are rated as an “extreme” risk for wildfire. Warm temperatures, dry conditions and strong winds are already creating challenging conditions for crews battling the wildfires across the province, especially in areas in the north half of Alberta.

A dominant ridge of high pressure situated over the west and edging into the territories has become the main weather-maker for Alberta and B.C.Under that ridge stable conditions will prevail for the next couple of days, bringing above seasonal temperatures, minimal cloud cover and no risk of active weather (aside from the edges of that high).

As expected, Sunday was a much different day than Saturday bringing mixed precipitation across portions of central and southern Alberta and a daytime high in Calgary dropping by more than 10 degrees on Sunday. Monday will serve as a day of transition as an incoming ridge of high pressure pushes that brief source of instability (a low-pressure system) out of the region.
