Ever since I was a small child, I have adored cats. And as a long-time cat owner, it’s certainly not unusual for me to wake up with a feline companion curled up at the foot of my bed. What’s unusual this time, however, is that the cat in question is a big one – a Sumatran tiger, to be exact. Thankfully, it isn’t actually on my bed. Instead, we are separated by the glass wall of my luxurious Jungle Bungalow at Jamala Wildlife Lodge.

Long before our water taxi pulls into the jetty at Malolo Island Resort Fiji, we can already hear the welcome song drifting toward us across the sparkling blue ocean. A large group of staff have assembled to greet us; some playing guitars, others dancing and clapping, but all singing and smiling brightly. They must perform the same greeting several times a day as new guests arrive, but you wouldn’t know it. Their warmth radiates like they are welcoming old friends and family.

When I pictured myself relaxing at Fiji’s luxurious Likuliku Lagoon Resort, this is not exactly what I had in mind. I imagined I might be lazing poolside with a cocktail in hand, having an indulgent massage in the spa or perhaps lying in a hammock while gazing at the brilliant blue sky framed by coconut trees gently swaying in the breeze. But all of that can wait.
