Apr. 14—GRANITE FALLS — The Montevideo baseball team crushed the ball in the bottom of the fifth inning. Up 5-4 through four innings, the Thunder Hawks put up seven runs on six hits in the bottom of the fifth in the non-conference game against Yellow Medicine East on Monday. That helped propel Montevideo to a 14-4 win in six innings at Richter Field. AdvertisementThe game was originally scheduled to play in Montevideo, whose field is not yet playable.

Apr. 14—NEW LONDON — The cold, windy weather did not cool the New London-Spicer softball team's bats on an overcast Monday evening. NLS lashed out 11 hits in its 15-2 five-inning victory against Watertown-Mayer in the Wright County Conference game. The Wildcats are 1-1 in conference play and 2-3 overall. The Royals are 0-1 in the conference and 0-3 overall. AdvertisementMallory Johnson went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a run and one steal for the Wildcats, who had three other hitters finish with two hits.

Apr. 8—RAYMOND — Errors hurt the MACCRAY baseball team late as Adrian/Ellsworth broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the seventh inning to beat the Wolverines 8-6 on Tuesday evening. MACCRAY, needing one out, had a pair of errors that helped the Dragons (1-2) score four runs in the final inning in the non-conference game. It's Adrian/Ellsworth's first win and the Wolverines' season opener.

Feb. 28—MONTEVIDEO — Things started well for the Montevideo boys basketball team and then got better in the Thunder Hawks' Section 3AA-North playoff game. Top-seeded Montevideo beat eighth-seeded New London-Spicer 70-29 Friday night. Montevideo got off to a 15-0 start and never looked back, leading 42-10 at halftime. "Our defense was outstanding for the game," Montevideo head coach Derek Webb said. "We just played tremendous defense the whole night.

Feb. 27—MARSHALL — The Minnewaska girls basketball team relied on its offensive rebounding and gritty, aggressive defense to knock off New London-Spicer in the Section 3AA-North semifinals Thursday night. The second-seeded Lakers improved their record to 26-3 with a 42-36 victory over top-seeded NLS at the R/A Facility at Southwest Minnesota State University. NLS (27-2) beat Minnewaska 54-57 Dec. 10 in New London.
