WILLMAR — Sauk Rapids edged the Willmar boys tennis team on Thursday, earning a 4-3 victory in the Central Lakes Conference match. The Storm, behind a sweep of wins from its doubles teams, improve to 2-0 in the conference and 4-0 overall. Willmar is 0-2 in conference matches and 0-4 this spring. Ryan Newberg, Carter Newberg and Sam Loerzel earned singles wins for the Cardinals. Ryan Newberg won 6-2, 7-5 against Hunter Rood at No. 1.

SPICER — The scoreboard got a lot of work at the Green Lake Diamonds on Thursday. In the bottom of the third inning of a non-conference baseball matchup between New London-Spicer and Paynesville, the Wildcats sent three balls over the outfield fence for home runs. Two of those were back-to-back from Brayden Skindelien and Blake Schultz.

GROVE CITY — The BOLD/Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart track and field teams performed well at the Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City Invitational on Thursday. Both the girls and boys BOLD/BLHS squads took first place. The girls won with a 144, followed by Paynesville’s 115 and Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg’s 98. ACGC had 91. The boys won at 120.5, edging Royalton’s 118.5 and Benson/KMS’ 99. Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa came in at 75 and the Falcons finished with a 71.

ST. CLOUD — The Willmar softball team got swept by the St. Cloud Crush on Thursday at St. Cloud Tech High School. St. Cloud beat the Cardinals 3-2 and 10-0 in the Central Lakes Conference doubleheader. In Game 1, St. Cloud’s Lola Jacobs out-dueled the Cardinals’ Grace Kalkbrenner. Jacobs struck out 10 with no walks, allowing six hits and two runs, one earned. Kalkbrenner struck out four, walked two and allowed four hits and three earned runs.

Fourth-seeded West Central Area secures its first Class A state title behind a 58-41 victory over seventh-seeded MACCRAY. It marks the first time a fourth seed has ever won a state title. The Wolverines finish as the Class A state runner-up with a 25-6 record. @MaccrayAthletic
