Seven friends who were returning from a waterfowl hunting trip in Kansas were among those killed in a plane crash earlier this week in Washington, D.C.The outfitter who guided the group, Fowl Plains, posted about the tragedy on Facebook. “We’ve always said our clients are more than friends. They’re family. Last night we lost 7 family members in the horrific plane crash. 7 family members we’ve had the privilege to hunt with the last few years,” the outfitter wrote.

On September 3, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) announced that the state’s Veterinary Laboratory had confirmed a case of anthrax in a dead moose found in Carbon County, Wyoming. The moose was found near the town of Elk Mountain in the southeastern part of the state, according to a press release from WGFD. CWD has been prevalent in the area for 20 years and is a priority monitoring area for elk herds.

On May 12, 2023, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) received a report of a young female mountain lion with signs of severe hind leg ataxia and paresis in a residential area of Douglas County. The cat was experiencing limited mobility due to an inability to bear weight on its hind end. It was dragging itself with its front legs and was responsive to stimuli. Wildlife officers tranquilized the cat and then euthanized it with a gunshot to the chest in order to preserve neurologic tissue.

I’ve never been much of a turkey hunter. Growing up in the West, it wasn’t something we normally did, and I never had the itch of those afflicted by the turkey fever. And the common assertion that turkeys are like elk always turned me off to the pursuit. How could anyone compare a 20-pound bird to the majesty of a bull elk?
