Joe Kanzangu Joe Kanzangu is a certified Level 1 Canadian Association Snowboard Instructor (CASI), home chef, and writer. He's based in New York City and Montreal. Blood permeates under my fingernails. My left pinky and right pointer have gone completely numb. The plum undertones usually on my palm match the light hue of the red wine I’m struggling to hold at my favorite Montreal neighborhood tavern, Bar Henrietta.

Writer Joe Kanzangu kayaks through clear waters in Nova Scotia. Sinuhe XavierThe tide is high at a wide sandy point off Martinique Beach in Nova Scotia. The waves are slender and short, my surfboard a sharp single-fin incision. As the cool Atlantic waters glaze my Finisterre wetsuit, I paddle and paddle until my board finally lifts up. I pop up over a wave, feet planted, arms balanced, the wind boosting me to shore just a few seconds before I fall.

Montreal might be the most culturally spirited town in North America right now. Just a few hundred miles from metropolitan “neighbors” like New York City and Toronto—but otherwise what feels like a continent apart—Canada’s island city on the St. Lawrence River is its own richly distinctive harbor for cuisine, art, music, adventure, and virtually nonstop citywide celebrations (it's home to nearly 100 annual festivals) that run the gamut.
