Caltrans is wrapping up work on a 20-mile $48 million Pacific Coast Highway repaving project. It's not the scenic fire-scarred deadly-crash-prone part of PCH that's been in the news a lot lately. It's the part of PCH along the harbor, mostly in the cities of Long Beach and Los Angeles - plus stretches in Redondo Beach, Torrance, Lomita, Signal Hill. In this southern part of L.A. County, PCH runs inland, generally two to three miles from the shoreline.

Remember road widening? It's harmful to city budgets, pedestrians, cyclists, climate, air quality, historic preservation, etc. Last year both the L.A. City Council and even the state of California voted to stop harmful spot-widening. The state effectively banned cities from requiring developers to widen roads at new infill housing projects. The city (mostly) stopped requiring developers to widen roads at new projects. But the city didn't actually stop widening roads.

Last Saturday, thousands of people participated in Let's Go Glendale. Most participants biked, while many walked, jogged, scootered, skated, and traveled by wheelchair - all on 1.3 miles of a car-free Glendale Avenue. The event was presented by Metro. Let's Go Glendale was the city's first standalone open streets event, though the jewel city was part of the 2017 CicLAvia event connecting Glendale with L.A. City's Atwater Village neighborhood.

Two successful mobility advocacy organizations are joining forces to strengthen their efforts toward a safer more walkable/bikeable/transit-friendly California. Los Angeles based Streets for All was the main organization behind L.A. City's 2024 passage of Measure HLA, which requires gradual implementation of planned bus, bike and walk facilities. Streets for All is active in numerous campaigns for state legislation, new bikeways, new bus lanes, and more.
