    With a population that is both growing and aging, Salem Health leaders said the demand for trauma care continues to increase in the region.     An Independence man was sentenced April 14 to 18 months in prison for assaulting three Monmouth Police officers while they attempted to take him into custody on outstanding felony warrants over allegations he assaulted another police officer. A Polk County jury found Francisco Javier Morales-Hernandez, 39, guilty of two counts of assaulting a public safety officer, fourth-degree assault and resisting arrest.     The sudden closure of Rudy's Steakhouse in downtown Salem has left many reeling. Employees showed up to work on April 15 to find the doors locked and a lease termination notice posted to the doors of the longtime restaurant at 350 Chemeketa St. NE, its banquet hall and Rudy's Butcher Shop. Employees have been unable to get paid for their last month of work, former general manager Thomas Nacrelli said in a GoFundMe for the employees suddenly left jobless.

    A two-student team from Sprague High School tied for first place in a national competition about the U.S. Constitution on April 11. Sprague seniors Colin Williams and Matthew Meyers placed first in the We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution National Finals, an annual competition in which high school students from across the country answer challenging questions about the Constitution. Their win garnered the pair the national championship and a story in The New York Times.
