RUTLAND — George Farrington is proud to be a 10-year brain tumor and brain injury survivor. Of course, recovery is ongoing, and likely will be for the rest of his life. Farrington no longer drives or works full time, but his cognitive skills continue to progress, and come Aug. 17, his plans are to run in the Falmouth Road Race to raise money for the Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts.

As the Worcester Firefighters 6K celebrates its 25th anniversary of its first running next month, participants are appreciating the long and short of the event. To the 5K enthusiasts, the extra kilometer could present pause, a possible turnoff, throwing the system out of rhythm, questioning whether there would be enough in the proverbial tank to finish. Many would stop after the first 3K and call it a day.

Since that day in 1954 when Sir Roger Bannister became the first to run the mile in under 4 minutes, the number of his followers to the milestone has burgeoned exponentially. Still, the achievement remains one attained remarkably by athletes, as it requires clockwork consistency, averaging under a minute over four consecutive laps around an outdoor track. Holy Cross junior track captain Liam Lyons continues to humbly shake his head over his recent accomplishment.
