PRAIRIEVILLE, La. (WAFB) - Prairieville High celebrating its first day of school and operation this year, but the football team has been established and practicing all summer long getting set for its debut season. The hurricanes certainly aren't dipping their toes in the water if you will. It's a full cannonball for long-time head coach Mike Schmitt and company as Prairieville will play 5A ball this fall. While that's a daunting challenge the Canes are excited to attack it.

ST. JAMES PARISH, La. (WAFB) - St. James came up one point and twenty seconds shy of a state title last season. The Wildcats fell to Union Parish 36-35 in the closing moments of the contest. Lavanta Davis and company have to replace several key leaders who have moved on and graduated. Chief among the losses are Sportsline Player of the Year Finalist Brayden Williams and Southern Jags wide receiver Kobe Brown.

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - The Glen Oaks Panthers are entering year two under Anthony Jones and hoping to build on a 2-8 season in 2023. Jones a 2001 graduate of Glen Oaks, played quarterback for the Panthers back in the day. The program regularly made the playoffs back in those days under Nolan Gill, but in the present Glen Oaks hasn't clinched a playoff berth since 2009. GREENSBURG, La. (WAFB) - The St. Helena Hawks pieced together a solid 2023 season, right about at .500, and a playoff appearance, but an early exit in the first round at the hands of Port Allen. A big point of improvement heading into 2024 is the offense. St. Helena hoping to tinker with the philosophy to help with some challenges that logistics pose.

SPRINGFIELDS, La. (WAFB) - Springfield football is on the move in 2024. The Bulldogs elevating the program from 2A to 3A this coming fall. Springfield struggled down the stretch last year and finished up at 4-7 with a first-round playoff exit at the hands of Many. The offense struggled to incorporate a consistent passing game while the defense had its issues with open field tackling.

DENHAM SPRINGS, La. (WAFB) - For the third consecutive offseason, Live Oak football is breaking in a new head coach. Randall Legette was promoted from OC to HC during the offseason and he's hoping to build on a 2023 that featured some struggles. Legette now transitions from a play caller to more of a CEO but is pleased with the pieces around him. The Eagles new OC David Maryland has implemented more spread concepts to the offense with RPO's and creativity.

There was a lengthy losing skid and the roster was depleted. Fast forward a couple of years later and the Buccaneers have laid a strong foundation and are excited to keep attacking more success in 2024. Nutrition has been a big point of emphasis this offseason for the Bucs.

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - St. Michael High School is constructing a brand-new football field to be located in the rear of the school grounds. The Warriors are similarly continuing to renovate their program's philosophy. Zachary Leger's team broke out last season with a 7-2 regular season followed by the school's first-ever playoff win. Now, the challenge is taking things a step further. "We're here to prove we're a perennial power," Leger said.

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - LSU starting pitcher Luke Holman has emerged as one of the best in the SEC and country this season. The Alabama transfer ranks top three in the conference in earned run average, opponent batting average, and strikeouts. The Alabama transfer has become a key piece in the Tigers' hopeful return trip to Omaha. "I only have one problem with Luke Holman. It's that I'm only going to have him for one season. Everything about him is elite," Jay Johnson said.
Baton Rouge Zydeco announces consistent game times for 2024-2025 season

In some cases, you have a general idea of when a game will begin, but sometimes those times don't become available to the public until weeks or even days before the event. That won't be an issue next season with the Baton Rouge Zydeco. The organization announced Thursday morning, April 18, their plans to institute more consistent start times.
