A deputy and suspected shooter were wounded Monday after a man with a weapon was seen approaching a family courthouse in downtown Houston, leading to a shootout, the Harris County Precinct 1 Constable's Office confirmed. The armed man was walking from the area of the civil courthouse at 201 Caroline St., toward the Family Law Center, typically teeming with lawyers, courthouse workers and others during the busy lunch hour.

A man and woman on Thursday were charged with felonies in connection with the beating death of their 2-month-old boy last year. JaMari Mari Bailey, 21, and Marybeth Clarisa Rodriguez, 22, are accused of causing serious bodily injury to a child, according to Harris County court records. They were arrested late Wednesday and were being held at Harris County jail morning. The child died in June 2024, seven days after being taken to an urgent care center because he appeared ill, police said.

Houston rapper Big Slim's apartment was broken into Monday night, while the performer was out of the city attending the NCAA Men's Basketball national championship game in San Antonio. A burglary was reported at Catalyst apartment building, 1475 Texas Ave, around 11 p.m. Monday, the Houston Police Department said. The apartment's resident left around 3:30 p.m., and was alerted by building security that the unit's door was found left open, according to police.

A Houston man, who called himself a rabbi and gained a following showcasing his life as an adoptive father, was sentenced to 135 years in prison Monday after he pleaded guilty to continuous sexual abuse of children he once cared for. Hayim Nissim Cohen, 40, was given four 40-year sentences and a 15-year sentence by district Judge Danilo Lacayo. Cohen will serve the sentences concurrently. He is not eligible for parole.
