Paredes added a two-run homer in the ninth inning, his 14th of the season, to increase the lead to 8-2. Acquired from the Cubs along with Smith in a winter trade for three-time All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker, Paredes had his second multi-homer game of the season and eighth of his career. PITTSBURGH -- It turned out to be worth the wait for the Astros on Thursday night into Friday morning.

PITTSBURGH – It appeared the Pittsburgh Pirates were going to fall one out short of throwing a shutout. With two outs in the ninth inning and a runner on first base, the Houston Astros’ Jake Meyers hit a 104.4-mph liner to deep center field. It seemed certain that Meyers would get at least a double and Yainer Diaz would score. However, Oneil Cruz raced to the front of the warning track and made the catch to preserve the Pirates’ 3-0 victory on Wednesday night at PNC Park.

PITTSBURGH -- The tables were turned on Wednesday night. However, it was Houston which was shut out in the middle game of the series with Pittsburgh. The Astros managed just seven hits combined off Bucs rookie Mike Burrows and three relievers as they were blanked for the fourth time this season, 3-0, at PNC Park. Houston went hitless in four at-bats with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. “I thought we couldn’t get our bats going,” manager Joe Espada said.

PITTSBURGH -- Lance McCullers Jr. finally got some peace of mind on Tuesday night. The Astros right-hander pitched six scoreless innings to get his first win since Sept. 21, 2022, as Houston beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0. McCullers missed the 2023 and 2024 seasons because of injuries and had not won in five starts this year since being activated from the injured list on May 4.

Really cool event in New York. Pirates SS Isiah Kiner-Falefa got to meet someone from Ralph Kiner’s side of the family for the first time. IKF met his second cousin, Scott Kiner, Ralph’s son, who released a book on Ralph. He was emotional, calling it “an incredible moment.” https://t.co/10nGlB0ldV
