Annil McIntosh moved from Jamaica to Newark in 2019 and soon after enrolled at Newark High School where, despite having no prior formal training, she has became one of the most prolific track stars in recent Yellowjacket history. Moving to the U.S. was a big adjustment at the time for the middle-schooler, but little did she know it would be one that was just setting her up for an even bigger move.

What started out on Saturday at the Bob Carpenter Center as a homecoming win of sorts for a Caravel Academy alumna ended up being just a preview of what would be a celebration for the entire Caravel Academy girls basketball program one day later. Newark Charter divers Maddie Hiller and James Beukema swept the diving competitions at the DIAA Swimming and Diving State Championships last Saturday at Carpenter Sports Building. For Hiller, when her winning score of 388.10 was announced, it marked the fourth straight time the senior captured first place.

I was at the University of Delaware — Campbell basketball game last Saturday and had the opportunity to meet “Pat”, who is Newark Charter’s new and improved mascot. He was joined by more than a dozen other notable mascots including Poe (Ravens), Rocky Bluewinkle (Blue Rocks) and of course YoUDee and Baby Blue. No sign of any of the four Philadelphia teams’ mascots, which isn’t unusual at this annual mascot event, but is disappointing.

Christian Zavala-Rosiles had never stepped foot on a wrestling mat when he walked through the front door of Newark High School as a freshman. I saw firsthand how Newark Charter School’s boys basketball team plays every single game as if it can and should win, regardless of the opponent. On Jan. 28, the Patriots jumped out to a big lead against a much taller Appoquinimink team ranked in the Top 10 by playing with pure grit.
