Castillo to play softball at Cal State Bakersfield

REEDLEY – Winning has been a regular part of Ahani Castillo’s softball journey, first with two championship teams at Orange Cove High and then at Reedley College. She now hopes to help build a winning tradition in Kern County. Castillo, a star on two Central Section championship teams for the Titans and a first team all-Central Valley Conference selection for RC in 2024, has signed to attend Cal State Bakersfield on a full scholarship.
Cutler-Orosi Aquatic Complex plunges ahead

OROSI – The future Cutler-Orosi Aquatic Complex is gradually becoming a reality, and will provide an oasis for Orosi High swimmers and the community starting next year. The facility, at the site of the school’s old varsity baseball diamond on the west-central side of campus, remains on track to be open for Orosi High’s swim season in early 2025 according to Raffi Soghomonian, director of facilities/transportation operations for the Cutler Orosi Joint Unified School District.

REEDLEY — A co-ed adult tournament at Immanuel High School quickly is developing a reputation as a go-to spot for male and female adult volleyball players. The second annual Eagles King Cup Tournament at Immanuel South Gym on June 22 attracted nine teams from the Central Valley, most from the immediate eastern Fresno and northern Tulare County regions. But it was two Bakersfield teams that grabbed the glory in 2024.

SANGER — Two familiar schools took home championship hardware in the 10th and final Evan “Shoot” Medina Basketball Tournament over the weekend. Host Sanger High captured the boys title, the school’s second straight, while Roosevelt High won a fourth consecutive girls division championship. The Apaches were led by tournament Most Valuable Player Justin Hernandez, while Nyleigh Gregory earned the MVP award for the Rough Riders girls.
Sanger players star in County All-Stars football victory

FRESNO — The six members from Mid Valley Times region schools on the County All-Stars made their presence felt during a dominating victory in the 70th edition of the annual summer football matchup. Combined with an MVP performance from quarterback David Marquez of Central High, the County put up four unanswered touchdowns in the game’s final 25 minutes to roll to a 35-7 victory on a warm night at McLane Stadium.
County softball holds on to edge out city

FRESNO — Things became a little dicey in the late innings, but the County All-Stars made it four straight victories in the annual softball rivalry with their city counterparts. The 42nd annual matchup before a large crowd at Fresno State’s Margie Wright Diamond was essentially decided in the fourth and fifth innings, when the County erupted for all its runs to build a 9-2 lead before hanging on for a 9-7 victory.
Coleman, Wood named top Immanuel High athletes for ‘23-24

REEDLEY — Multi-sports Class of 2024 standouts Nicolas Coleman and Allison Wood recently were honored as Immanuel High School’s Male and Female Athletes of the Year. Coleman, who starred in football and baseball, and volleyball-softball standout Wood received their honors at the school’s season-ending athletic awards ceremony on May 20. The school also honored all its athletes and coaches in fall, winter and spring sports at the event.

SANGER — The third annual Jalen Moreno-Cropper and Friends Football Camp over the weekend proved to again be a popular draw for youth players. Nearly 200 youngsters ages 7-13 years received instruction from Parlier native and former Sanger-Buchanan and Fresno State star Moreno-Cropper, along with other professional players during a two-hour camp-clinic at Dodson Field east of Tom Flores Stadium on June 15.

SANGER — A dozen years remembering a son through the odyssey of love, heartbreak and remembrance will soon come to an end. The annual Evan “Shoot” Medina Memorial Basketball Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, June 22 at Sanger High School. For a sixth time, the event will bring together 10 high school boys teams and 10 girls teams to participate in game action as a tribute to the late Sanger High Class of 2006 graduate who died in a 2012 vehicle accident.

DINUBA – A meteoric two-year development in girls hurdles excellence paid off for Dinuba High graduate Avril Mendoza, who has signed a letter of intent to attend Fresno Pacific University on a full-ride track scholarship. Mendoza, the Central Section Division II champion in the 100 meters (15.18 seconds) and 300 meters (43.81, later improved to 43.12) hurdles runs, officially signed her letter during a June 7 ceremony at DHS west gym.
