Statistically, the Mets rotation remains atop the heap, No. 1 in all of baseball, with a 2.93 ERA. Realistically, it doesn’t feel that way today. According to those in the know, staff ace Kodai Senga, the National League ERA leader, is expected out a minimum five weeks after suffering a hamstring injury. That he only suffered a Grade 1 (low grade) strain is considered the positive news of the week that got away from them.

The MVP of the first-place Mets, and maybe the National League, too, is Pete Alonso. The Mets’ second MVP might be the fellow who brought back Alonso, owner Steve Cohen, who’s paying Alonso $30 million (never mind the $33M in luxury tax). But the third MVP just might be a more anonymous fellow, pitching coach Jeremy Hefner, who’s the leader of baseball’s best and most surprising pitching staff.

Shohei Ohtani, who could be back pitching in July, is the clear NL MVP favorite. But based on current exploits, it might be between a couple of guys named Pete drafted by the Mets: Pete Crow-Armstrong and Pete Alonso. The Alonso signing may not be the best of the winter (that might be Max Fried), but it isn’t far behind, even with $33 million in tax added to the $30M salary. He won’t be getting $500M, or close.

The Braves, with an expected record of 35-32 despite their actual record of 29-38, are in buy mode. They’re seeking outfield and shortstop bats, and presumably bullpen help. But if they fall further, ace Chris Sale will at least inspire calls. Sale would bring a haul in a thin market, but his $18 million team-friendly 2026 club option makes them disinclined to trade him. The small-market Brewers can surprise.

A potential dud of a trade deadline may need saving by a few “bubble” teams with valuable pieces to sell — that is, if they sell. The downtrodden Rockies, White Sox and Pirates aren’t going to do it, not with Pittsburgh putting a “no sale” sign on ubertalented Paul Skenes, Ryan McMahon at .219 and Luis Robert Jr. still below .200. Here’s a look at 10 bubble teams, with current chances to sell:1. Orioles: They had high expectations entering the season, but the current expectation is realism.
