COLORADO SPRINGS — Family owned and operated in Colorado Springs for more than four decades, Platte Furniture has broadened its horizons to include an underground art gallery that regularly features a rotation of works from local artists. What started with Dick Kelly (the store's founder) selling used furniture out of his garage soon lead to the creation of Platte Furniture in 1978; in the years since then, the showroom floor has expanded and now is measured at 36,000 sqft.

MONTE VISTA — For thousands of years, an unbelievable cascade of Greater Sandhill Cranes have poured down on the San Luis Valley near the end of winter as part of their northerly migration. According to the National Park Service, more than 20,000 cranes can be expected to pass through the San Luis Valley during the migratory event with the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge acting as one of the hot-spots for crane-centric activity.

GEORGETOWN — The start of each new year brings with it five weekends of ice racing for a group known as Our Gang 4-Wheelers, a crew that has spent nearly 50 years racing across the frozen expanse of Georgetown Lake. Since 1976, dozens of competitors have dedicated these few weekends (from January to the beginning of March) to driving their jeeps, trucks, and assorted other vehicles to (primarily) Georgetown lake in order to experience winter at speed.

LEADVILLE — The first weekend in March marked the 77th running of the wildly fast and extremely wild Leadville Skijor, a high-octane happening that's the result of pairing cowboy culture with ski culture. The event, which dates back to 1949, revolves around skiers being towed down the town's main thoroughfare (which is transformed into a snowy obstacle course) at speed while tightly gripping a length of rope that's tied to a sprinting horse.
