For just the third time since the inaugural UIL boys soccer state champion was crowned in 1982, two teams from the Houston area will square off against each other for the ultimate prize. Klein Cain (23-2-3) will take on Elsik (24-2) for the Class 6A Division I state title at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown. The previous two all-Houston matchups featured Klein vs. Kingwood, with Klein prevailing both times in 1999 and 2005.

Now in his third year at Texas A&M, the former five-star prospect should finally have ample opportunities to showcase those attributes. When David Pierce arrived at Schroeder Park on Tuesday afternoon, he was strolling into enemy territory, sure. But he was also returning to a place he knows well. Pierce, named the head baseball coach at Rice just 22 days ago, served as an assistant coach at the University of Houston in 2001 and 2002 before continuing on a head coaching career during which he's amassed hundreds of victories with stops at Sam Houston, Tulane and Texas.
