Courthouse closings, delayed cases and trials, and potentially less security in courtrooms are all possibilities if the New Hampshire House's budget plan gets final approval, according to the chief justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court. Chief Justice Gordon MacDonald said the House budget plan would result in about a 10% cut to the judicial branch. Gordon said about 75% of the branch's budget is for personnel.

Officials in Merrimack are starting to figure out how to manage the town's money after voters rejected the proposed budget.It took six months to come up with a new budget, but voters rejected the proposal Tuesday.The Town Council will now need to figure out what to cut. This is the second year that a default budget is being put in place.Leaders said they received no feedback from residents leading up to the vote.

An international student at Dartmouth can stay at the college after he was told last week he no longer had his student status. Lawyers from the ACLU brought the case to federal court to figure out how to move forward, saying he did nothing wrong. Friday, Dartmouth College sent an email to Xiaotian Liu, 26, a doctoral student from China studying computer science.

A federal judge in New Hampshire has ruled that an international student at Dartmouth College can continue his studies after he was told last week that his student status was terminated. Attorneys for Xiaotian Liu said during an emergency hearing that the 26-year-old doctoral student from China had done nothing wrong. They said they wanted to keep him from being deported as they challenged the termination of his status without a fair warning.

A new report shows that between the summers of 2023 and 2024, 12 child deaths were reported across New Hampshire agencies focused on care for families. The Office of the Child Advocate, which wrote the report, said the number is down compared to years past, but more funding is needed to keep the trend low. The Office of the Child Advocate oversees the state's child-serving agencies.
