AbstractMass loss from ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica has quadrupled since the 1990s and now represents the dominant source of global mean sea-level rise from the cryosphere. This has raised concerns about their future stability and focussed attention on the global mean temperature thresholds that might trigger more rapid retreat or even collapse, with renewed calls to meet the more ambitious target of the Paris Climate Agreement and limit warming to +1.5 °C above pre-industrial.

Traders have slammed council plans to fine drivers for pulling up outside their shops. Stoke-on-Trent City Council wants to turn part of Christchurch Street, in Fenton - between City Road and Baker Street - into its latest red route. It means any driver caught pulling over on the double-red lines will be fined £70. Allan Jones, aged 55, of Allan Jones Traditional Family Butchers, said: "I might as well shut. I put in my objections. They are saying it's due to congestion.

Oatcake lovers are happy that their local oatcake shop has reopened. The former owners of Hamil Oatcakes in Hamil Road, Burslem, hung up their pinnies in 2023. The shop had been closed on a regular basis since. However, it was recently taken over by Sri Lankan mum-of-three Jasi Suthakaran who is believed to be the first Asian oatcake shop owner in the Potteries. Jasi, aged 53, told StokeonTrentLive: "I was born in Sri Lanka and moved to the UK 35 years ago.

Traders fear double-red lines on one of Stoke-on-Trent's busiest roads 'will kill business'. Stoke-on-Trent City Council wants to operate its latest red route on part of Bucknall New Road, in Hanley. The double-red lines - which trigger a £70 fine if a driver pulls over on the carriageway - are planned between the Potteries Way and Lindop Street junctions. They will replace the existing double-yellow lines. But affected businesses are not happy. Lassaad Ben-Hmida owns Mobis phone shop.

A popular pub is celebrating after being named the best in the business for the third year running. The Lodge Inn, Alsager, has been named The Campaign for Real Ale's (CAMRA's) South Cheshire pub of the year for the third consecutive year. Owner Carl Smith, aged 58, who used to run The Gresley Arms, Alsagers Bank, and The Swan at Bignall End, was delighted with the recognition. He told StokeonTrentLive: "We came here in 2021 after lockdown. It was a real mess. It took us three months to refurbish.
