Redland City Council has endorsed a new Biosecurity Plan that will enable the continued robust management of invasive weeds, pest animals and other biosecurity risks across the city. Mayor Jos Mitchell said that, under the Queensland Government Biosecurity Act 2014, every council across the state was required to adopt a biosecurity management plan relevant to their area.

Redland City Council has resolved to commence the development of a new City Plan that will guide future land use, growth, and development across the city. Mayor Jos Mitchell said there were several reasons Council had decided to take this step, including to better align City Plan with recently released Queensland Government planning documents and Council’s strategic priorities.

Redland City Council is set to pilot a living shoreline project at Three Paddocks Park in Birkdale to enhance the ecological functions of the foreshore and protect against erosion, while also delivering amenity improvements in the area for park users. Mayor Jos Mitchell said the trial site would be established with funding received through the state-wide QCoast2100 program, which provides support to councils for projects that improve coastal hazard resilience.

Redland City’s future leaders have come together to share their ideas on key local issues at a free ‘Change Challenge’ workshop held recently as part of the Redlands Coast Young Citizens Program. Mayor Jos Mitchell said 16 students from Sheldon College, The Industry School, Wellington Point State High School, and Alexandra Hills State High School attended the session on 5 June, giving them an opportunity to put their skills into action and learn more about local government.

Redland City Councillors are highlighting the often-damaging effects of online bullying, with the launch of an advocacy campaign that calls for mutual respect in virtual spaces. Mayor Jos Mitchell said the ‘Respect 4 You, Respect 4 Me’ campaign aimed to promote respectful behaviour. “The effects of online bullying and harassment are well-known, and it is my hope that we all do our part in promoting respectful communication within our community,” she said.
