THORNLANDS resident Dean Roche recently caught the fish of a lifetime. His prize – a 1.4m, 100kg Queensland groper – was hooked at Harry Atkinson’s artificial reef in the middle of Moreton Bay. “I’ve been fishing for 40 years, and this is the biggest fish I’ve ever seen,” he said. “It took 45 minutes to swim it. This is day eight and I’m still sore. “I really had to work for it.”Roche, 40, said he turned to the internet to work out how to safely release the massive fish.

THE family of Betty Burns say they will “never forget” the presence of the much-loved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who passed away on Anzac Day. Mrs Burns, 98, died of pneumonia at Redland Hospital. She was part of a multi-generational Redlands pioneering family that ran a small crop farm along Bloomfield, Long and Princess Sts. Her late husband, Douglas Burns, the son of William and Bertha Burns, was the third generation to run the farm, working alongside his brother Eddie.

IN 1952, Victoria Point local Kevin Lowe locked eyes with a 3.5m crocodile in Eprapah Creek – an encounter he still vividly recalls more than 70 years later. Mr Lowe was fishing with his father at their favourite local spot when he spotted the crocodile staring directly at him. “I ran down the bank to Dad and he told me there were no bloody crocs up here, but he was proven wrong when the croc was shot in the Logan River 12 months later,” Mr Lowe said.

AFTER a decade at the helm of Redland Sinfonia, artistic director and conductor Graeme Denniss has laid down his baton, describing the experience as his “first chance to oversee something … something which is quite wonderful”. Mr Denniss, 70, of Birkdale, conducted his final concert in early April at the Redland Christian Reformed Church in Ormiston, playing to a full house in what he called a “fitting and joyous swansong” to his 10-year tenure.

WINNING awards at the International Cake Show has been the icing on the cake for three Redland decorators and Capalaba business Cordie’s Cakes. Kirsty Cordwell of Cordie’s Cake Supplies took out first place in the “cake buddy” section for the second consecutive year. “It is a privilege to win, and I feel honoured that people took time out of their day to vote,” she said.
