KYLE Johnson has come a long way from catching “little fish” with his father during his younger years. Today, the 23-year-old Redland Bay local ventures out in Moreton Bay and off Amity Point, landing some of the big catches that he once admired his father for. “Fishing – it’s one of those things that I’ve always done and always loved. I may as well stick with what I know and what I love,” said Kyle, who spends as much time fishing as he can, as long as life doesn’t get in the way.

BIRKDALE musician Torin Peat is set to take the stage at Byron Bay’s Bluesfest as a finalist in the Grommits under-18 busking competition. Torin, 14, was selected from a competitive field of 400 applicants, securing his spot as one of just six under-18s and 26 adults chosen for the prestigious event next weekend. He has been given a 20-minute set, with a second set on the main stage if he is judged a winner.

JAI Neumann has been fishing since he was just one year old and spending time with his dad in a tinnie. While the 23-year-old from Redland Bay may not always reel in a boatload of fish, it’s rare for him to come home empty-handed. “It was a pretty good way to hang out,” Mr Neumann recalled of his childhood. “Dad and I did so much, mostly prawning. “I remember catching about 20 litres of prawns in three casts off Coochie when I was about 15.

CLEVELAND High School student Braxton Hunt-Nissen may have always seen himself on the stage, but he has since discovered the joy of putting others in that same limelight. And that is exactly what he will be doing when his company, Dead Trigger Records, hosts Skate Punk, a free alternative music and creative arts festival at the Capalaba Skate Park on April 14 from noon to 7pm. “I am an independent event organiser who wants to make music accessible to all ages,” Braxton said.
