AbstractObesity and cardiometabolic disease often, but not always, coincide. Distinguishing subpopulations within which cardiometabolic risk diverges from the risk expected for a given body mass index (BMI) may facilitate precision prevention of cardiometabolic diseases. Accordingly, we performed unsupervised clustering in four European population-based cohorts (N ≈ 173,000).

1 INTRODUCTION Increased body iron stores, estimated by serum ferritin (SF) levels, are associated with higher risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D),1, 2 although their relationship with cardiovascular disease (CVD) is unclear.3 Ferritin is an intracellular protein with a significant capacity to uptake and store iron ions, with each molecule capable of sequestering approximately 3000 iron atoms.
