The city of West Des Moines has hired former public school administrator Megan Thole as its next director of human resources. Thole will start in the position Dec. 9, according to a news release from City Manager Tom Hadden. Thole has served as director of human resources for West Des Moines Community Schools since July 2021 and was previously associate principal at Valley High School. The release says she has also held administrative positions in the Chicago Public Schools.

A former National Transportation Safety Board member tells CBS News he's concerned that a failure in the process of manufacturing and inspection of Boeing's 737 Max 9 aircraft led to a near disaster in the skies over Oregon last Friday. That's when a panel on the side of the aircraft commonly referred to as a "door plug" blew out of the Alaska Airlines flight out of Portland as the plane climbed through 16,000 feet on its way to Ontario, California.

SALT LAKE CITY — Researchers from Brigham Young University are saying a poor diet isn’t the only reason for weight gain. Exposure to diesel exhaust can be a factor as well. During a study, researchers exposed mice to diesel exhaust for a month to see how the exhaust affected them. Juan Arroyo, professor of cell biology and physiology said the research would explain how pollution affects more than just your lungs.

SALT LAKE CITY — The friends and family of the late Rory Swimm know how to turn a positive out of the worst kind of negative. Swimm, 23, was with his friends Jimmy Ludford and Will Griffith on Oct. 13, 2023. They were walking around downtown Salt Lake City in the early morning hours when he was shot and killed by a teenager. His older brother, Scott Swimm, was in Scotland when he heard the news. His sister, mother and friends were understandably upset. But never bitter, they all looked forward.
