In their mission to promote diversity and inclusivity at an organization, ERGs tended to focus on the social aspects of building community—helping their members expand their professional network and celebrating cultural events. But those were yesterday’s ERGs. The employee resource groups of today do so much more. They still promote social activities, but they also help create a more inclusive culture, assist members’ career advancement, support business goals, and help build a sense of community.

For all my good memories there, I still wince a bit to look up at the building that for many years housed the Scruggs Law Firm. As in: Dickie Scruggs, the onetime “King of Torts,” who raked in almost $2 billion in fees from insurers (post-Katrina), asbestos companies, and (most of all) Big Tobacco. Inevitably, at least one of their clients wanted to know why they were so far off of trend. And I’ll never forget the outraged tech CFO years ago who was frustrated that our agency’s renewal projections for his company’s healthcare coverage weren’t aligned with what he’d heard at a tech industry healthcare roundtable. I noted the company’s poor claims history, workforce of large families, and an older than average population.
