Kristen Petruniw has resigned from the Wabash City Schools Board effective March 18, the Wabash City Council learned on Monday, March 24. Petruniw, who resigned as executive director of Downtown Wabash Inc. in December, will become a guidance counselor for the Wabash City Schools, Mayor Scott Long informed council. He informed the council of the opening because the council appoints members to the school board.

Wabash may one day earn a Tree City designation. The Wabash Board of Parks and Recreation approved Park Superintendent Adam Hall working with Geoff Schortgen, Extension Educator for the Wabash County Purdue Cooperative Extension Office, toward receiving the designation. Schortgen discussed plans with the Park Board when it met on Wednesday, March 12. He said work is just in the beginning stages and that it could take up to a year before the city is prepared to seek the designation.

The Wabash City Council approved on first reading a measure to increase the fine for heavy traffic on local streets. Under the current ordinance, the fine is $200. A Wabash City Council member has apologized to Mayor Scott Long and the remaining members of the Council for comments he made earlier this year on social media. The Council member, Charlie Coyne, apologized to the officials via email. At the February 10 meeting, Wabash resident Kent Mullett complained about the comments that some believe constituted hate speech. Coyne defended his personal beliefs during the meeting but also issued an apology.

The Wabash City Council approved a resolution Monday, Feb. 24, opposing legislation regarding property tax cuts now under consideration at the Indiana Statehouse. The resolution takes issue with two measures – Senate Bill 1 and House Bill 1402. “One of the biggest drops is net assessed evaluation,” Mayor Scott Long explained. “They’re talking about eliminating personal property taxes for businesses, which would result in a loss of $3,050,000, or an annual loss of 186.1 percent to the City of Wabash.
