The Newark ship fire that killed two firefighters in 2023 was caused by crews using an unsuitable vehicle to push cars onto the ship, federal investigators said Tuesday. Augusto “Augie” Acabou, 45, and Wayne “Bear” Brooks Jr., 49, were killed while responding to the blaze on the Grande Costa D’Avorio at Port Newark on July 5, 2023. The fire started with a Jeep Wrangler, which was being used to push non-running vehicles onto the ship, the National Transportation Safety Board said in its report.

Elaine Wynn, the woman who built a Las Vegas casino empire alongside her husband, Steve, has died at 82. Wynn died Monday after battling a “brief illness,” a family spokesperson told the Nevada Independent. “We are all deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Elaine Wynn, and send our condolences to her daughters, grandchildren, and her many close friends,” Wynn Resorts said in a statement on Tuesday.

A magnitude-5.2 earthquake struck Southern California on Monday morning, rattling buildings and knocking objects off shelves but leaving no significant injuries or damage. The earthquake’s epicenter was about 3 miles south of the town of Julian and about 40 miles northeast of San Diego, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was preceded and followed by several smaller shocks. San Diego County firefighters reported no calls for service in the immediate aftermath of the quake.

A suspicious person was arrested Monday morning at UnitedHealthcare’s headquarters in Minnesota, authorities said. The unidentified person’s presence prompted a massive police response at the provider’s campus in Minnetonka, a southwest Twin Cities suburb, the local police department wrote on social media. “A suspect outside of United Healthcare has been placed into custody without incident,” Minnetonka police said Monday afternoon. “There is no threat to the public.
