Ricardo Scofidio, an architect who revolutionized urban public space in his hometown of New York with works such as the High Line and the transformed Lincoln Center campus, died yesterday, March 6, in Manhattan at the age of 89. According to a statement from his firm, Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R), he passed peacefully surrounded by family, including his partner in life and work, Elizabeth Diller.

In late January, while on a short trip to Washington, D.C., I had the opportunity to tour inside the Smithsonian Castle, now closed for a major renovation expected to last several years. Completed in 1855 in a combination of late Romanesque and early Gothic revival styles, it is the signature building of the institution, unique for being established by Congress but not an agency of the government.

As treasure troves of human history, we often think of museums as having been around forever. But the museum—both as an institution and as a building type—with few exceptions, is a fairly new phenomenon in the millennia-long time line of cultural production. The most visited museum in the world, the Louvre, was a former royal residence that opened its collections to the public free of charge in a post-Revolution Paris at the end of the 18th century.

Take, for example, a pair of utility structures at Princeton designed by ZGF. Geo-exchange may not be as familiar a term as geothermal, but one of the oldest universities in the country is investing heavily in the not-so-new but still-underutilized technology.

Needless to say, designing for such a rich variety of building types presents architects with countless challenges but also invites opportunity for inventive solutions, in many cases awe-inspiring ones.

Driving through the Northwest Woods neighborhood, it’s difficult to see the often small, far-apart, cedar-shingled houses beyond the dense columns of trees and leafy canopies. This sylvan enclave in East Hampton has a decidedly different feel from the rest of that tony beach town. But here, as in most areas on the East End of New York’s Long Island, things are rapidly changing.
