Clarke Schmidt returns to the mound Wednesday night in what should be a solid pitching boost for the New York Yankees. Schmidt spent the first two weeks of the season on the injured list after needing extra time to ramp up his shoulder. That same shoulder limited the young righty to 16 starts in 2024, though he went 5-5 with a 2.85 ERA. His sinker touched 96 mph on his rehab assignment, so all signs point to a healthy arm.

The New York Yankees have a new voice behind the mic at WFAN: longtime Seattle Mariners play-by-play man Dave Sims. He’s in the big chair alongside Suzyn Waldman after 35 years of John Sterling. “It’s an opportunity to work with a franchise that everybody knows,” Sims told me in a recent conversation. “And I’m coming in after a legendary career of John Sterling, and I’m ready. New York (7-5) are tied with Toronto (8-6) for first place in the AL East after New York came back down to earth in Detroit. San Francisco, on the other hand, is 9-3 and a half-game behind the Padres for first in the NL West after an early eight-game winning streak.

It’s been a rough few days for New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger, who is back in the lineup after missing Tuesday’s 5-0 loss at Detroit with food poisoning. Speaking to reporters before Wednesday’s afternoon tilt, Bellinger explained it all. He was watching the men’s college basketball final on Monday night and ordered some buffalo wings from room service before getting sick in the middle of the night.

It’s not blatantly obvious, but Yankees righty Carlos Carrasco is pitching for his future in Detroit on Tuesday. Granted, the 38-year-old veteran is no stranger to Comerica Park. Carrasco was a frequent visitor during his 12 years with Cleveland and went 6-5 with a 3.72 ERA in 15 games (13 starts) in the Motor City. Fast forward to today, and Carrasco is attempting a comeback following two-and-a-half forgettable years with the Mets, plus another pitstop in Cleveland.
