Too often, Rhode Island’s best businesses get gobbled up and then become just outposts for major corporations, but one law firm has reverse-engineered the model and is growing across the country. The Providence-based law firm Hinckley Allen is in full growth mode. It is opening offices across the country and expanding its staff. Moreover, the firm is doing some things that are counter to one of the major corporate business strategies now in vogue.

While Providence College and URI men’s basketball programs get most of the press, and Brown tries to make some noise, all three of those teams have losing conference records this year. You can drive up Route 146 however and see the Bryant University men’s basketball team zooming. The Bulldogs are 8-0 in the America East Conference and 14-9 overall. The Bulldogs' out-of-conference losses included St. John’s, and in many of those games, Bryant was missing multiple key players.

Helena Foulkes comes from a powerful political family. A very influential family with deep political and financial connections to the Sacklers — the owners of Purdue Pharma — the family and company who are named as the driving force in the opioid crisis. Foulkes’ uncle and maternal grandfather were both U.S. Senators from Connecticut, dominating that state for decades. Purdue Pharma is headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut.

While much of the news about Roger Williams Hospital’s parent company has been about bankruptcy, deficits, and allegations of financial impropriety, the other story is about the role the hospital plays in treating thousands —  and especially cancer patients. Roger Williams means life or death. One Rhode Islander wanted to make sure people knew about what he says has been the tremendous care he has been receiving at the hospital for the more than six years as he has been battling cancer.

Rhode Island PBS, the media corporation with little viewership and more than $100 million in assets, is seeking more donations and trying to fight off cuts by the incoming Republican Congress. In a January 2, 2025, email to donors, RIPBS asked for financial support and issued a warning of federal cuts. “Rhode Island PBS seeks to embrace new opportunities to serve you in 2025. Yet the entire public media system faces a big question: Will circumstances diminish or even end our federal funding?
