Zoey Haines was arguably the most dominant wrestler in the PIAA Girls’ Championships. The Gettysburg senior won by pin in all four of her bouts, needing just over five minutes of total time to do so. The mental gymnastics involved in the state wrestling tournament can be mind-numbing, to say the least. On Thursday, that mental warfare appeared to claim casualties. Of the six wrestlers Gettysburg brought to the PIAA Girls Championships, half were taken out of action following the first two rounds. The Warriors did push Brooklyn Henry (100) and Zoey Haines (142) into the quarterfinals, and Taylor Keckler (106) is still kicking in the consolations, but attrition came early.

Dave McCollum slowly walked to the corner of the Susquenita High School gym where his Eagles had been nested for most of the day, placed a tall trophy on the second row of the bleachers, turned around and smiled. The veteran coach’s team had wrestled well all day, piling up enough team points to easily capture that trophy when the curtain came down on the District 3 Class 2A Section 1 Tournament on Saturday. McCollum’s reaction was as much relief as celebration.
