BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - There was hardly an empty seat at Bernie Sanders’ “Fighting oligarchy” rally in Bakersfield yesterday. Thousands attended the independent Vermont senator’s event in conservative Kern County. Sanders and New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez shared the stage at Dignity Health Arena.

BORON, Calif. — Alison Kapusta has called Boron home for decades. The Mojave Desert community is tiny and remote, which is just how the retiree says she likes it. Most of all, Kapusta enjoys the sight of otherworldly Joshua trees. The iconic species is exclusive to the Mojave, and thousands used to jut from the landscape south of Boron. “But now, they’re gone,” she said. “They demolished all of the Joshuas.”In their place is a large construction site – the early stages of the Aratina Solar Center.

DELANO, Calif. — Nearly six decades after civil rights leader Cesar Chavez ended a 25-day fast at Memorial Park in Delano, thousands marched this week for three miles to call for the continued protection of workers – and for the protection of immigrants. The Monday march took place on the 32nd anniversary of Chavez’s death. It was centered around what is now known as The Forty Acres – the birthplace of the farmworker movement. Chavez co-founded the United Farm Workers in 1962.

The digital notification system is the first-of-its-kind in the United States, according to the agency.

KERN COUNTY, CALIF. – One month after a surprise U.S. Border Patrol operation sowed chaos across Kern County and the larger San Joaquin Valley, the Department of Homeland Security is being sued for alleged rights violations. The American Civil Liberties Union, the United Farm Workers and five Bakersfield residents are suing the agency and seeking to urge the agency comply with constitutional and federal laws.
