On a cold drizzly morning in my Altadena neighborhood, I stood behind red tape, watching an excavator heave and groan through the burnt remains of our home. Inside the cab was a long-haired, goateed man who swung the excavator’s arm forward, tearing down the few standing walls like sheets of paper. There’s no real roadmap after your home burns down.

At a memorial in Glendale on Saturday, Korean American groups will be paying tribute to one of the last survivors of Japan’s wartime sexual slavery. Ok-seon Lee died this week in South Korea at 97. She was known as "Grandma Lee" on her travels to U.S. cities with large Korean American communities like Los Angeles and Glendale to call for greater accountability from the Japanese government.

The latest: The incident was reported at around 5:00 a.m. The tour bus was reportedly carrying about 60 passengers. The collision involved the bus and a SUV, according to the L.A. County Fire Department. The SUV was engulfed in flames. Authorities say at least one person sustained critical injuries, and 32 people in total were transported to local hospitals. California Highway Patrol is on the scene and investigating.
