Best New Hotel: Raffles London at The OWOWinston Churchill once addressed members of British intelligence from The Old War Office in London’s Whitehall neighborhood. Now the stately Edwardian landmark welcomes its dignitaries more openly as a 120-room Raffles hotel – the brand’s first in the UK – designed by Thierry Despont, who reimagined the wood-paneled spies’ quarters alongside grand Piastraccia marble halls.

Arriving at a sustainable tourism crossroads in Quintana Roo. The power outage was probably our first sign. Somewhere along the single highway that zips south from Tulum to Belize, strong winds had downed a line, leaving much of the tiny town of Bacalar without lights or air conditioning. On our way to this Pueblo Mágico (preserved Mexican village) and its storied lake of the same name, we knew we’d have to slow down. But if conspiring nature and utilities had any say, we’d be stopping for a while.
