After a disappointing first-round playoff exit, the Los Angeles Lakers have another eventful summer ahead. Any discussion about the Lakers' offseason starts at the top of the roster. LeBron James has a $52.6 million player option he has to decide on by June 29. Luka Dončić is eligible for a four-year, $229-million extension on Aug. 2. Those decisions - both out of the Lakers' control, to some degree - will dictate the tenor of the summer.

In late October, the Los Angeles Lakers ran an action for rookie wing Dalton Knecht early in the second quarter against the Phoenix Suns. Knecht had a split-second opening to launch a 27-foot 3-pointer, but he turned it down. The ball ended up in LeBron James' hands with the shot clock waning. James tried to drive but couldn't create separation as the shot-clock buzzer sounded. As the Lakers ran back down the floor, coach JJ Redick stood up and scolded his group.

The Los Angeles Lakers remain optimistic about JJ Redick as their head coach despite their first round exit, sources tell The Athletic. The Lakers will not make a coaching change. Redick generally received favorable reviews in his first season as head coach, but his decision to only play five players in the second half of the Lakers' Game 4 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves received criticism. Rob Pelinka conducted his end of season media availability alongside Redick.

LeBron James is not expected to entertain the possibility of re-signing with the Los Angeles Lakers on a lesser contract should he opt out to become a free agent this offseason, sources tell The Athletic. Last offseason, James became a free agent and was reportedly willing to take less money if the Lakers were able to convince James Harden, DeMar DeRozan, Klay Thompson or Jonas Valanciunas to sign with the team. Because the Lakers didn't sign any of those players, James re-signed at his max.

The Los Angeles Lakers will be amenable to whatever contract structure Luka Doncic desires as the five-time All-Star is widely expected to commit to a long-term future with the franchise, sources tell The Athletic. The organization completed the trade for Doncic without assurances he would re-sign, though he told ESPN before the postseason that he wants to stay with the Lakers.
