The Los Angeles Lakers' early exit from the 2025 NBA playoffs should prompt careful reflection during this offseason. What could they have done differently? The Luka Dončić trade was always more about the future than the present for the Los Angeles Lakers. It was about securing the next face of the franchise - issuing the transition from the LeBron James era to the next era. But the Lakers maintained high ambitions for this season. Before the trade, the Lakers had begun rounding into form. Dončić's arrival gave them a young superstar capable of carrying the offense on a deep playoff run.

After a disappointing first-round playoff exit, the Los Angeles Lakers have another eventful summer ahead. Any discussion about the Lakers' offseason starts at the top of the roster. LeBron James has a $52.6 million player option he has to decide on by June 29. Luka Dončić is eligible for a four-year, $229-million extension on Aug. 2. Those decisions - both out of the Lakers' control, to some degree - will dictate the tenor of the summer.

In late October, the Los Angeles Lakers ran an action for rookie wing Dalton Knecht early in the second quarter against the Phoenix Suns. Knecht had a split-second opening to launch a 27-foot 3-pointer, but he turned it down. The ball ended up in LeBron James' hands with the shot clock waning. James tried to drive but couldn't create separation as the shot-clock buzzer sounded. As the Lakers ran back down the floor, coach JJ Redick stood up and scolded his group.

The Los Angeles Lakers remain optimistic about JJ Redick as their head coach despite their first round exit, sources tell The Athletic. The Lakers will not make a coaching change. Redick generally received favorable reviews in his first season as head coach, but his decision to only play five players in the second half of the Lakers' Game 4 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves received criticism. Rob Pelinka conducted his end of season media availability alongside Redick.
