1. IntroductionAs power systems move toward decarbonization, the integration of variable renewable energy (VRE), primarily wind and solar, is increasingly prevalent in power grids. However, the intermittent nature of VRE presents significant challenges to grid stability and reliability [1]. Recently, there has been a growing interest in improving system flexibility to address these fluctuations, with demand-side flexibility emerging as a promising solution.

eLife Assessment This fundamental study substantially advances our understanding of how habitat fragmentation and climate change jointly influence bird community thermophilization in a fragmented island system. The authors provide convincing evidence using appropriate and validated methodologies to examine how island area and isolation affect the colonization of warm-adapted species and the extinction of cold-adapted species.
