The Long Beach City College Art Gallery had a closing reception and featured artists panel for its “Battle of the Saints” exhibition, giving the campus community one last chance to celebrate and enjoy various pieces featuring Chicano/Latino, African American, and Khmer artists and culture. Art pieces were made from various forms, including prints, wood panels, an altar installation reminiscent of sidewalk memorials, and art memorial displayed in video form.

Long Beach City College students from the Associated Student Body and the latest John Fylpaa Leadership Institute cohort converged in the Nordic Lounge on Mar. 22 for the one-day Dr. Beverly O’Neill Student Leadership Conference. The event featured a keynote session from former students and two breakout sessions that featured various topics on leadership, activism and student success. It wrapped with an afternoon session of panelists who served in past ASB leadership positions.

Campus community members started to notice a new frequent visitor to the courtyard of the P building at LAC: mallards, or commonly known as wild ducks. The female duck has built a nest underneath a bush in front of the LBCC Viking News student newspaper office and is vigilantly aware of foot traffic and those in close proximity. According to Ducks.org, once a female duck builds a nest, eggs will be laid approximately 1-3 days later, then hatch about 28 days after incubation.

A light drizzle began the afternoon of May 30th at Bixby Park, so attendees and event organizers hurriedly moved into the Community Center to celebrate Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV). Though everyone was in very close quarters, the halls, foyer and main event room were abuzz with activity and filled with laughter.

The Viking Vault food pantry has remained largely empty by mid-week for the past two months, reminiscent of empty market shelves during the COVID-19 pandemic. The food insecurity situation on-campus has not improved. The cafeteria remains shuttered. Other food options, such as the bakery, bistro and food trucks, remain out of the affordable price range for many students.
