    Long Beach City College President’s ambassador Shamonique Harris has been announced as the incoming Associated Student Body president for the 2024-25 school year. With over 50% of the 106 student voters casting their vote for Harris, she won the election by a 30% margin according to data given to the Viking by ASB advisor Kim Hamon. That percentage translates to 58 total votes for Harris with both other candidates receiving under 30 votes.

    Long Beach City College trustees voted to recognize May as Jewish American Heritage Month alongside Asian, Pacific Islander and Desi Heritage Month on Wednesday night, following a slew of public comments in support of the Jewish American Heritage Month. During the trustee comment portion of the resolution, trustee member Sunny Zia spoke at length about her support for this type of recognition for the Jewish community.

    By July, Genuine Foods’ contract will be officially terminated with Long Beach City College at both Pacific Coast Campus and the Liberal Arts Campus. Genuine Foods supplies eateries on both PCC and LAC such as the Carson & Clark and the Viking Express. “As far as we know we’re going to have to find new jobs. The pay here was really good, and I barely make enough money as it is, so it’s going to be a struggle for me, especially with the bills.

    In collaboration with the city of Long Beach, the college has opened its first satellite campus in North Long Beach. The North Long Beach Higher Education Center is a campus meant to “bridge the digital divide” between students who wish to attend LBCC, but live too far from campus to commute every day, according to trustee Uduak-Joe Ntuk. What was once a dingy, dilapidated building, not even built to support Wi-Fi, has now become a resource for the north Long Beach community.

    Newly opened food vendor, Carson & Clark is closing in the next 90 days, confirmed Superintendent-President Mike Munoz. “We’re moving forward with a different food distributor from my understanding. I don’t know the full details currently, but we do have a plan.” said Munoz. Students have been wanting cheap food spots close to campus since the closing of the cafeteria during COVID. Eventually starting last semester, food trucks were offered as an expensive alternative.
