Smoke plumes visible on Sunday in Metro Detroit likely emanated from a marsh fire on Squirrel Island, said the Walpole Island Fire Department in Ontario, Canada. The fire is one of about 15 on Walpole Island since Thursday, Chief Bob Smith told The News. It's burning in a remote area on the far southeast end of Squirrel Island, not close to any of the other fires. He estimated it was about 30%-40% contained by late Sunday afternoon. The fire remained under investigation.

More than 12,000 once-vacant homes in the Detroit Land Bank Authority's stock have been renovated, the organization announced Wednesday. The DLBA had 45,000 vacant homes in its stock in 2014, and the organization has whittled that to fewer than 4,500, according to a news release. "It was thought that demolition was the only option we had to eliminate the blight," said CEO Tammy Daniels in an interview Wednesday.

The Livonia City Council is set to weigh ballot language later this month for a 1.43 millage that voters would decide on during the Aug. 5 primary to pay for the bonds.
