Detroit News

The Detroit News is one of the leading newspapers in Detroit, Michigan. It was established in 1873, initially sharing space with its competitor, the Detroit Free Press. Over the years, The News expanded by merging with other publications, including the Detroit Tribune on February 1, 1919, and the Detroit Journal on July 21, 1922. On November 7, 1960, it acquired the struggling Detroit Times and eventually closed it down, although it kept the Times' building for printing until a new facility was built in Sterling Heights in 1967, leading to the demolition of the old structure. The location in downtown Detroit where the Times building once stood is still known as "Times Square." In 1985, The News' owner, the Evening News Association, merged with Gannett.
