A Caldwell chef received Idaho’s second James Beard Award on Monday. Chef Salvador Alamilla of Amano received the prestigious best chef regional award from the James Beard Foundation in Chicago. Alamilla received the award for the Mountain region, which includes Idaho, Colorado, Utah, Montana and Wyoming. In his acceptance speech at the ceremony, Alamilla credited the women on his team for the honor.

Federal forecasters are predicting unseasonably high temperatures this summer. Local Wildland firefighters are preparing for a hotter, drier and potentially longer fire season. Last year, about nine million acres of land burned across the U.S.. As temperatures warm up, authorities warn Idahoans to stay away from canals. Almost 70,000 feet of canals run across the state, in both agricultural and residential areas. In a video from the Boise Fire Department, now-retired Chief Paul Roberts warned canals are more dangerous than they appear. The water is extremely cold and the water can be deceptively deep, with sections running upwards of 10 feet deep. “There are portions of the canal that actually go underground.

Idaho Fish and Game is looking for volunteers to survey milkweed patches and count monarch butterflies across the state this summer. Populations have been dwindling over the past decade and scientists aren’t sure why. Fish and Game wildlife biologist Tempe Regan says there are a lot of different ways. Counting them as adults, as they flutter about, can be tricky and more opportunistic.
