The city of Clarksdale withdrew a lawsuit Tuesday filed against a newspaper for an editorial it published accusing the city of being secretive and deceptive. The city sued Delta Press Publishing over the editorial in the Clarksdale Press Register earlier this month in Hinds County Chancery Court. The city accused the paper of defamation.

A federal judge has granted a protective order in the bribery case against Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, District Attorney Jody Owens and Jackson City Councilman Aaron Banks. The order means that evidence disclosed to the defendants in the case will remain for their eyes and the eyes of their attorneys only. U.S. District Court Judge Lakeysha Greer Isaac issued the order on Feb. 5.

On Thursday, the Mississippi House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a bill that would completely overhaul the state tax system.House Bill 1, also known as the Build Up Mississippi Act, passed by an 88-24 vote.The bill includes a gradual phasing out of the state's income tax and reduction of the grocery tax, which at 7% is the highest in the country.
