Agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raided an Omaha meatpacking plant Tuesday morning, transporting a busload of workers from the plant to an unknown destination. Officials with ICE said in a statement that the agency executed a search warrant at Glenn Valley Foods “based on an ongoing criminal investigation into the large-scale employment of aliens without authorization to work in the United States.” No other businesses were targeted, ICE said.

Police are investigating what is believed to be a murder-suicide that occurred Friday night at a west Omaha restaurant. Just after 9 p.m. Friday officers responded to a 911 call of a shooting in the parking lot of Stokes restaurant, near 137th and California Streets, according to a press release. Officers found a 17-year-old girl inside a car and an 18-year-old man on the ground nearby both with gunshot wounds. Police believe the man shot the girl before turning the gun on himself.

The ACLU of Nebraska named Jennifer Houlden, a Lancaster County public defender, as its acting legal director. Houlden took over last week from Rose Godinez, who left the ACLU last month, managing their attorneys and legal work while a national search is conducted for its next legal director. Houlden worked for the Lancaster County Public Defender's Office for nearly two decades, most recently managing its juvenile and misdemeanor divisions.

Three Memorial Day observances are planned for Monday in Lincoln, the Lincoln Memorial Day Observance Association has announced. Programs are planned for 8:30 a.m. at Wyuka Cemetery and Funeral Home, 3600 O St.; 11:30 a.m. at Lincoln Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 6800 S. 14th St.; and 7:30 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Garden in Antelope Park, 1650 Memorial Drive.

Officials are asking Nebraskans to donate a popular, discontinued wax to protect the statue of Abraham Lincoln on the west side of the Capitol. The cast-bronze statue of the former president is covered in a protective lacquer coating and wax is applied to protect it from the elements, according to Matt Hansen, Capitol preservation architect.
