London Town is not where you go to find basketball stories. Or so they say. Obsessive focus on the beautiful game of proper football, fish and chips, delicious September temperatures, frequent trains to Manchester, craft coffee everywhere and what might be Planet Earth's last tangible appreciation for the printed word in newspapers that has gone extinct elsewhere in too many places to count ... all of that (and more) is what lured me to London for two recent visits.

The day after Labor Day, as we like to say around here, is a bit of a holiday unto itself in the modern NBA. It's the day that players — not all but some ... especially those on the younger side — begin to return to team practice facilities to start getting ready for the official tipoff of training camps at month's end. Established veterans tend to trickle in at their own pace, but Labor Day generally signals that the NBA summer is over (or at least ending) and that work will be starting anew soon.

I was a little surprised how popular it became, as the results of that model were cited quite often (for better and for worse). The model has been slightly tweaked since I left Sports Reference, but the framework remains the same. I decided to look into this topic again, basically starting from scratch.

About 15 years ago, when I was still working on Basketball-Reference.com, I came up with a model to predict the NBA’s MVP Award winner in a given season. The goal was to model the behavior of the voters, not to determine the “most deserving” player. Since it’s been quite some time since I did this, I thought it would be fun to revisit the issue. I decided to use the 1980-81 season as my starting point, as that’s when the voting shifted from the players to the media.
