By A person has fired shots at officers during an early morning standoff in Wilmington, police said. Wilmington Police Department is on the scene of a suspect barricaded inside their home on the 4800 block of Whitner Drive, officials said. Police are asking residents in the area to "stay indoors and shelter in place until advised further, this if for their own safety."This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Visas can be canceled for a number of reasons, but college leaders say the government has been quietly terminating students’ legal residency status with little notice to students or schools. A man is dead after getting into a shootout with deputies at a hospital early Tuesday, the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office said. Shortly after 1 a.m., deputies said the Sentara Albemarle Medical Center called for help when a man entered the emergency room armed with a gun and pointing it at multiple ER personnel. A hospital security guard tried to subdue him, investigators said, but the man struck the guard with the gun, injuring him.
