Gauteng Metrorail train services are facing intermittent disruptions due to the continuing rain, with flooding of some railway infrastructure, including tunnels and platforms. The Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) said flooding has affected train stations including Silverton and Belle Ombre and rail corridors. Prasa spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng said tracks have been flooded at the Leralla station “resulting in “trains turning to Limindlela station in Thembisa”.

Forensic waste collectors arriving at the disused Stilfontein shaft where 78 dead bodies were retrieved. Only 26 South Africans were among the almost 2,000 zama zamas who resurfaced alive from the Stilfontein illegal mining operations. SAPS national spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe said their operation at the Buffelsfontein shaft 11 that started on Monday led to the retrieval of 246 people and 78 bodies.

Nelson Mandela's grandson who was arrested with four other suspects on Wednesday after a hijacked vehicle was found at the former statesman's former home in Houghton was released on Friday and didn't appear in court as expected. He was released because off insufficient evidence linking him to the alleged offence, but the prosecutor told the court he remains a suspect pending finalisation of investigations.

The 24-year-old man accused of raping and killing six-year-old Amantle Samane in Orlando, Soweto, in October has abandoned his bail application. The Mozambican appeared briefly in the Protea magistrate's court on Tuesday. It was previously reported the welder was living in rented backyard accommodation in Orlando. After Amantle went missing, a witness reported seeing her walking with him earlier that day. Her body was found on the floor of his shack. Police arrested him in Zola, Soweto.

The maternal grandmother of a 13-year-old girl who was allegedly repeatedly raped by a Heidelberg attorney, Carel Benjamin Schoeman, 35, knew about the allegation but did not report it to the police or social workers. This was revealed by investigating officer Capt Veronica Banks during a cross-examination on Thursday at the Johannesburg high court sitting in Palm Ridge magistrate's court.
