Bilirubin is a waste product that is processed by the liver and is responsible for giving bile, which helps your body digest fats, its yellow color. While low bilirubin levels are typically not a cause for concern, elevated or high bilirubin (hyperbilirubinemia) can cause jaundice, a condition in which your skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow. In adults, high levels may indicate a benign genetic disorder, such as Gilbert syndrome, or an underlying issue with your liver.
